Mini and Junior rugby follows the Rugby Pathway. The pathway is set out by the WRU together with the District Junior Rugby Associations in Wales, to ensure the children play in a safe environment, and are introduced gradually to the fame of rugby and its various aspects.
In its simplest form is tag rugby, also known as ‘Dragon Rugby’. This is played by under 8’s (under 8 as of September 1st that season) . Tag rugby is 1005 non contact and is the ideal introduction to the game as it is safe, and the players can enjoy running passing and supporting each other.
2008/09 Season Sees us starting with 2 mini level Teams.
Our Under 8’s is a completely non contact ‘tag’ rugby. It is similar to touch rugby but the players wear tags and are not allowed to grab or tackle each other. It is a mixed team and all of our current under 10 girls started playing tag. Training is Thursdays at 5:30 at the Vaughan field (the clubhouse field) and is coached by Nick Rees.
Our under 10’s team is a mixed team and is contact rugby and follows the pathway in the following ways from tag
1. Tackling is allowed but must be at waist level or below. Grabbing shirts and swinging (scragging ) is not allowed.
2. Kicking is allowed inside a teams own 22.
3. Handing off a player is not allowed
4. Scrums take place, but they are non contested (no pushing).
5. Line outs take place but are uncontested
6. 10 players per side
Training takes place at 5:30 Thursdays at the Vaughan Field.
Players of all ages are welcome to com along to training sessions, if only to watch and see how it all works.
All the coaches involved are fully qualified to a minimum of Level 1 International Rugby Board standards, and will have attended a 2 day coaching course with the associated examination following. The training and examination is controlled and provided by the IRB & the WRU. So you can be sure your children are in safe hands.
